Visual storytellers can play an important role in reflecting today’s dynamic landscape and seizing opportunities for greater representation and dialogue. That’s the belief of San Francisco-based visual media organisation Catchlight, which uses the power of visual storytelling to educate, connect, and transform communities throughout the Bay Area. CatchLight is now accepting applications for the CatchLight Global Fellowship class of 2022, and they’re looking for people who want to have a long-term effect while also seeing the obstacles they’ll face as a chance to lead the field in new and creative ways.

The $30,000 CatchLight Global Fellowship, made possible in part by a collaboration with MPB.com, serves as an incubator for visual storytellers who want to expand their businesses, gain financial assistance, and unleash their own potential. Through the Fellowship, we want to foster a thriving community of creative thinking leaders who can benefit from each other’s expertise, personal growth, and professional connections.

Info About Catch Light:

Our mission at CatchLight is to help people develop a more nuanced and compassionate view of the world via the medium of visual storytelling. All levels of visual storytellers from all around the world are discovered, developed, and amplified by them. Through two fellowship programmes, the organisation invests in the future of visual storytelling. Awarded yearly, the CatchLight Global Fellowship funds the development of long-form storytelling initiatives, audience engagement, and the continuation of the innovators and leaders shaping the field’s future. Community-based visual journalists (Local Fellows) are paired up with partner newsrooms with little or no visual storytelling capability so that the public may get inclusive and accurate information that is also contextualised in the community. An additional $2 million was invested in CatchLight’s Local initiative in California in 2021 to help combat the decrease of visual journalism in the state of California. People and organisations like Emerson Collective, Silicon Valley Foundation, Enlight Foundation, FujiFilm, The John S and James L Knight Foundation, The Kresge Foundation, and PhotoWings are generously supporting CatchLight via their donations.
