PhD Position in Sweden in Animal Science at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences 2024

PhD Position in Sweden in Animal Science at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences 2024 is open now. The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) plays a vital role in advancing sustainable living through science and education. Focusing on the harmony between humans, animals, ecosystems, and responsible natural resource use, we contribute to creating a sustainable society and improving global living conditions. Our campuses are primarily in Alnarp, Umeå, and Uppsala, but we also operate research stations, experimental forests, and teaching sites across Sweden.

With about 3,000 employees, 5,000 students, and a turnover of over SEK 3 billion, SLU invests in creating appealing environments across our campuses. We strive for an inclusive work atmosphere promoting gender equality, welcoming diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Our goal is to foster conversations among people from different walks of life, stimulating science, creativity, and progress.

Regarding the Doctoral student opportunity in animal science (Ref SLU.ua.2023.2.5.1-4568) at the Department of Animal Nutrition and Management (HUV), our focus lies in fundamental and applied research on animal feed quality, nutritional value, metabolism, housing, and care. We aim to establish sustainable and profitable animal production with excellent animal welfare while producing high-quality food. Our research spans agricultural production animals, sport, companion animals, and explores sustainable production systems in low-income countries. HUV is responsible for education, research, and postgraduate programs in nutritional physiology, feed science, management, and aquaculture. The doctoral education subject, “From field to feed – Nutrient quality and technical solutions for feeding silage to organic pigs,” falls under Animal Science.

Project Description for PhD Position in Sweden in Animal Science at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences 2024

In Swedish organic pig farming, ley crop silage serves as a crucial component. It provides pigs with quality roughage, fostering behaviors that promote their welfare. This type of silage holds promise for supplying nutrients to pigs, potentially reducing the need for costly protein feed purchases.

Securing high-quality organic protein feed resources presents challenges. Seeking locally produced and sustainable alternatives remains essential. Grasses and legumes, rich in protein and amino acids, could serve as valuable protein sources in organic pig diets. However, for efficient nutrient utilization by pigs, silage must align with their nutritional needs. This involves optimizing taste, crop preference, and chemical composition to match pig requirements.

This project aims to explore the effective utilization of ley crop silage across the organic pig production chain, addressing current and future system demands. Investigations will encompass feed quality, animal responses, gut health, and feeding strategies. Practical insights into forage crop selection, silage quality, palatability, and on-farm silage management are vital for organic farmers to maximize the profitability of this feed resource.

The role involves planning and executing experiments, conducting sampling, performing laboratory analyses, and potentially engaging in teaching activities to a limited extent.
